ABOUT

The Cultural Performing Arts Programme is a multi-disciplinary arts project for Secondary School students, which incorporates cultural and contemporary dance, song, music and language.
In many cultures around the world, traditions, cultural stories and practices are expressed through song and dance. This programme draws on this and provides an opportunity for young people to express their identity and worldview through creative and artistic mediums, in a way that is relevant and engaging for them.

CREATIVE

AIMS

Our creative aims and outcomes are youth-centric and designed to engage young people in a way
that is relevant for them. We want to create a space for the young people to articulate their identity
and tell their story through a creative outlet and be confident in their identity. This programme creates a platform for the young people to gain confidence and tools for their voice to be heard.

The creative aims and outcomes are:

  • Personally connect with their culture and identity

  • Express their identity through creative mediums

  • Develop and produce an artistic piece work (i.e. Original cultural dances and songs, contemporary dance repertoire fused with traditional dance to create performative pieces of work)

  • Experience the artistic process of developing content for and producing a show

  • Collaborate with creatives and peers to develop artistic content

  • Expert skill and knowledge from lead creatives to be imparted and nurtured within the young people through the process

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

  • Employ culturally responsive pedagogy to provide an authentic learning experience for students

  • Learn from experienced and specialised creatives in various art-forms to developing and strengthen artistic skills

  • Foster creative thinking capabilities, which are transferable beyond the arts space into other subject areas and beyond the classroom - foster innovative thinking, which positions students to perceive the world around them differently and encourages solution-based thinking.

  • Develop analytical skills through the choreographic and creative process.

  • Critically articulate their story through creative mediums (This is non-conventional i.e. not essay writing).

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Depending on your School's intended outcomes we will customise the programme to meet your needs. We recommend the programme to run between 10 - 30 weeks to be able to achieve creative and educational aims. Based on your schools needs we will assign our Creative Facilitators to work with your students, providing regular weekly workshops, where they will learn dance choreography, songs and music towards the creation of performance pieces.

Both Vita and Nicole have developed and lead this programme in Secondary Schools across Marlborough & Nelson for 5 years. In this time Fua has been able to work in collaboration with Schools to link performances created through this programme with students gaining NCEA Dance credits. If this is something your School would like we can provide the framework and expertise for this.
